Kumihimo Starter Kit: KumiLoom Disk/Bobbins/Booklet/Cord Kumihimo Starter Kit: KumiLoom Disk/Bobbins/Booklet/Cord
Sale Price: $12.00

Kumihimo is a Japanese word for a braided cord. A centuries-old art form, now you can do it with the KumiLoom, a modern, easy-to-use braiding disk. This kit contains the KumiLoom personal Kumihimo braiding disk; 8 fantastic EZ-Bob cord-handling bobbins, making the work much easier and faster; a set of practice cords; and a 10 page booklet of instructions for the round braid! In the early 8th century, when the Buddhist religion spread in Japan, people began to use decorative braids in ceremonies. The making of these beautiful, usually silk, braids became an art, and later, people used colorful braids to decorate their clothing, hang ritual banners, lace samurai armor together, tie robes, and decorate weapons. Braids can be found in many cultures, but the Japanese developed the highest order of braiding techniques and complexity. Today, you can create beautiful braided cords in the Kumihimo style with the KumiLoom, the modern braiding disc. The notches provide the correct tension, so you don't need hanging weights. The cord winds up into the individual flexible bobbins, so you keep a compact workspace, but easily and quickly feed cord as you braid. There are 8 bobbins in this kit. So many uses! Your braids can be used to hang jewelry, for coiling on gourds or baskets, or as a purse handle. Braided cords are also used for eyeglass cord, cell phone loops, lanyards, light pulls or curtain ties, clothing, key chains, leashes, zipper pulls, binding, decoration, costumes...there's no end to uses for intricate braided cords.

The Passion of the Christ (Score) The Passion of the Christ (Score)

Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place. As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. Gibson's vision of the Passion has had many second-guessing his motivations and choices, but Debney's rich, evocative score proves there's nothing wrong with his ears. -- Jerry McCulley

This two-hour program in A&E's Biography series thoroughly documents the life and work of Picasso. Subtitled A Primitive Soul, Picasso's Spanish roots are depicted in detail through the images that reoccur in his work as a painter. His father was a painter, although Picasso quickly surpassed him and is quoted as having said, "In art, one has to kill one's father." In Paris he quickly rose to fame, supported by fellow artists and collectors, although he was haunted by his main competitor, Matisse. Major biographers of Picasso, including John Richardson, comment on the complexities of his life and creativity, his passions for women, his overriding ambition, his competitive nature, as well as his remarkable talent at creating new styles of painting by taking from other artists. As one commentator states, "He was always a thief." Big shifts in his work occurred with each new sexual relationship. This program aptly conveys the multitude of his relationships, many of which were happening simultaneously. Enamored by his children when they were young, Picasso lived off the energy of those around him. He remained terrified of death and of being alone. After Franco came to power, he vowed he would never return to Spain under his rule. In 1944, he joined the Communist party and remained loyal to it for the rest of his life. This program is extraordinarily well researched and serves as an eloquent testimony to Picasso's creativity and influence on developments in modern art. --Anne Barclay Morgan

There are a number of images that go through a person's mind when they are surrounded by primitive country decor. They see a crackling campfire, radiating its warmth to the people huddled around it, telling stories. They see the grandmother sitting in a rocking chair with words of wisdom mixed with hugs and kisses. They see the clear night sky, the tall spring grass, and the vibrant colors of the leaves in autumn all at once. How is it, then, that primitive country decor can evoke all of these images?

Well, in truth, it is due in part to cultural background. A person thinks of these things when they look at examples of primitive country decor at least partly because they have been trained by cultural references to associate these things. But there is much more than just their past experiences at work. Another aspect of the primitive country style that helps to evoke theme images is, well, the visual style itself. Primitive decor is essentially a style filled with things that look simple, old, and natural. The images of a campfire come from the raw wooden features that many primitive pieces have. The thoughts of their grandmother come from the antiqued look of the objects, and the warm images that the style uses.

The thoughts of nature are evoked by the fact that primitive country decor usually uses not only a great deal of natural materials, such as woods and so on, but also because the color schemes are often very reminiscent of the colors you find all around you in nature. Deep greens carry the image of the spring grass, while faded reds and yellows bring thoughts of the leaves of autumn. All of this imagery works together to give the style its appeal, certainly, but it goes even further than that.

There is an unexplainable quality to primitive country decor. It is all but impossible to be surrounded by it and not feel warm and safe. The qualities of primitive decor simply have a universal appeal. Often, the style uses very soft, gentle features, such as dolls and stuffed animals, making them even softer by giving them an aged look, and then it contrasts that softness with the rougher textures of raw wood. It may seem like a bizarre idea at first glance, but somewhere between the soft fabric of a stuffed rabbit and the rough bark of the raw wood furniture, there is magic.

Primitive country decor is really a very loose style at its core. You can usually bring together a perfectly good roomful of decor items by walking through a flea market and perhaps an art fair or two. There is no strict line in the sand that says where primitive country decor begins and ends, but it is always easy to recognize. Simply look for things that show a sense of warmth, an antique essence, and a showcase of nature's beauty in its raw forms. The greatest aspect of the style is that as soon as you come across the right mix of elements, you will instantly know it. Just look for thought of campfires and rocking chairs.
